Munich, or München as the Germans call it, is the third largest city in Germany and such an amazing city. It was a short weekend for me though because we left on Friday, and it was an 8 hour train ride away, and I left early on Sunday to fly to England. Although my trip was a whirl-wind it was so much fun!
One of the best things about our trip to Munich was that we went in a small group, usually we travel in huge groups with about 20 people and then break-off into small groups, but this time only 4 of us traveled to Munich. It was me, Claire, Erica and Morgan and we had a blast. The unfortunate thing about our trip was that it POURED the entire time, which was kind-of a shame because there was an outdoor festival going on. SOOO on our first day in Munich, after dancing till the sun came up the night before, we ate mexican food for lunch, then went to an Irish Pub for Irish coffee... we eventually decided to embrace the city, even though it was raining, and walked around outside and explored the festival going on. We got to see a performance, which to me seemed to be a type of German step show with people in traditional German outfits!? quite bizarre. We also got got to try some delicious German beer and trekked over to the Hofbrauhaus, which is a brewery owned by the state government. The Hofbrauhaus was quite an experience with women walking around in traditional clothing and seemed to be a popular place for bachelor and bachelorette parties!
While in Munich I did actually learn some things, we didn't just walk around and drink beer, although if we had I wouldn't have complained :) Some fun facts about Munich:
- Oktoberfest is held in Munich, which I wish we could have been there for, but the very first Oktoberfest was a celebration for the royal wedding of the Prince of Bavaria. Now Oktoberfest is the largest festivity in the world.
- The city was completely rebuilt after WWII because over 80% of it was bombed... and now it is incredibly the 3rd largest city in Germany!
- there are over 60 BEER GARDENS in Munich... needless to say they weren't very hard to find
- 1.8 million gallons of beer are consumed during Oktoberfest
- beer is actually considered a food to the people who live there!
Obviously beer is a huge part of Munich, so we obviously had to enjoy some beers while we were there... it would have been rude not to! :)
Other than drinking beer, we did part-take in indulging in some good-old German food. We found this great restaurant that not many tourists went to, mostly just locals, so we knew we would have a delicious dinner. Morgan is a vegetarian, so we did have some issues when the menu was in German and none of us spoke German, besides Guten Tag and Hallo. Sooo when ordering Morgan thought she had ordered some type of fish fillet and to our surprise it turned out to be a steak. So poor Morgan filled up on beer and pretzels.
That night we went back to the Irish Pub, which was a lot of fun, but it seemed to attract an older crowd, so we bounced back and forth between that and an Australian bar nearby... very German of us :)
Unfortunately I had to leave early the next morning to visit Bunny and didn't get to spend Sunday roaming Munich with the girls, but the time I spent there was enough for me to appreciate the city. Munichs motto is München mag Dich, meaning Munich likes you... and I ended up on a plane realizing I liked it too :)
